Gareth Cliff in Hot Water for Remarks About Kolisi Divorce
Radio and television personality, Gareth Cliff, is facing backlash for his comments about Siya and Rachel Kolisi’s break-up.
Earlier this week, the Kolisis – who were married in 2016 and share two children – shocked the entire South African nation when they announced that they were getting a divorce.
In an episode of “The Gareth Cliff Show” (streamed via YouTube on Wednesday, 23 October), Cliff shared his thoughts on the situation. However, he also made some befuddling remarks about the Springbok captain’s soon-to-be-ex-wife.
“I’m going to get into trouble for this, but I’m more upset for the coloured community,” guest Sunil Osman commented, to which Cliff replied, “I don’t watch a lot of sports and I don’t read, like, ‘YOU’ magazine, so … I thought Rachel was black for a long time until I saw a picture of her.”
In response, fans hopped onto social media to call out Cliff for his tone-deaf take.
“It has nothing to do with black and white here,” one Twitter/X user wrote. “I don’t even know why that needed to be included.”
“That is a completely insensitive and disrespectful reaction,” an Instagram user scathingly remarked. “There are 2 [sic] innocent children involved in this situation. Think about their feelings before saying anything. Very disappointing to watch this video.”
Cliff has yet to comment on the backlash.
